Let’s Go Kaimakli brings Kaimakli residents and friends together through creative and entertaining ways to celebrate culture, multiculturalism and neighborhood stories. For four years the group has been organizing festivals in the neighborhood; we go out on the streets to share moments, stories and learn about our surroudings. The festivals follow various theme; open windows, open doors, open yards.
This year’s two-day festival opened its yards to the public who eagerly visited the gardens of houses in old Kaimakli and who discussed with the owners about the houses’ history. The guided yard tour on day 1 was led by an architect and an arborist and was concluded in the Urban Gorillas office with a storytelling session on community togetherness by storyteller Katerina Kyriakou.
Regis Ice Cream, also are based in Kaimakli, celebrated 65 years with an ice cream exhibition showcasing their journey throughout the years (15-18th of June at Kaimakli´s Cultural Center “Μύλοι”) and offered festival-goers refreshing ice cream to quench our thirst during the tour. The day ended with a community dinner in Ayia Barbara square whilst listening to Kaimakli stories from local elders.
Day 2 filled the streets with traditional Cypriot games and live rembetiko music as the neighbourhood came to life and residents and friends were given a new opportunity to experience the location.
