The Independent project - MAXXI Museum, Rome

Within the framework of MAXXI’s The Independent project, Urban Gorillas presented Urban Spectacle, a curated series of artistic interventions exploring everyday human activity, social interaction and the use of public space.

Urban Spectacle was curated and artistically directed by Veronika Antoniou, who developed the overall concept and brought together artists, designers, performers and collaborators working across different disciplines and urban contexts.

The series explored the relationships between observer, participant and spatial context, using artistic interventions to question familiar ways of perceiving both public space and “the other”. Through participation, performance, temporary installations and collective actions, the project sought to create new encounters and encourage interaction between people who might otherwise coexist in the city without engaging with one another.

The project emerged from Urban Gorillas’ ongoing research and practice around public space in Cyprus, where many urban spaces remain underused and where patterns of social separation can limit opportunities for encounter. Urban Spectacle responded to these conditions through a series of experimental interventions that temporarily transformed different sites across the city and tested alternative ways of inhabiting, sharing and experiencing public space.

MAXXI – The Independent

The Independent is a research project developed by MAXXI – National Museum of 21st Century Arts, dedicated to identifying and promoting independent spaces, practices and forms of critical thinking.

Through the programme, MAXXI extends its activities beyond the traditional boundaries of the museum, mapping innovative creative practices in Italy and internationally and providing a platform for independent and non-institutional approaches to contemporary culture.
